No visit to Mumbai is complete without trying Pav Bhaji, a spicy mixture of mashed vegetables, heaps of fresh tomatoes and oodles of butter consumed with soft dipped in butter buns. Sardar Pav Bhaji is one of Mumbai’s favourite haunts for pav bhaji.Located in the bustling Tardeo area, the street side joint is a walk away from Mumbai Central railway station. If you are on a gastronomical trip to Mumbai, this is one of the halt that needs to be made.
Sardar Pav Bhaji has been set up in 1966, the place has grown from a street side stand into a small open-fronted restaurant with adjoining open kitchen. You can have a look at the butter-laden mixture being prepared on a giant tawa mashing all the vegetables and topping with the brick of butter. They serve 5-6 variations of Pav Bhaji. Cheese Pav Bhaji is an improvised version which is heaped with grated cheese. They also serve Jain Pav Bhaji with no onion and garlic.
Another dish that several diners favour is Masala Pav, in which the bhaji is stuffed inside the pav as the bread gets toasted to give the extra crunch. Our favourite is Amul Pav Bhaji , topped with heaps of butter ( We mean heaps ! ) and served along with pav drenched in butter.
The focus is on serving maximum people at a go and quick turnout. So, don’t sit there digesting the butter.
