Transport yourself to good college days with India’s first F&B campus opened in Gurgaon.Quite the largest restaurant, that too, on a single floor in the Gurgaon, if not in the whole Delhi/NCR . The theme is back to college, and the interiors are well justified to it. Prankster is a brainchild of the successful restauranteur and well-renowned food blogger. It’s amusing and funny, there are restaurants that are running the race to bring something out of the box to amaze people and break cliche and yet there is a restaurant coming from nothing extraordinary but projected on the phase of life we all lived and yet the place will amaze you.
Space is broken down into a small section of the library, mixology lab, amphitheater, canteen , classrooms, and hostels. As you enter there is a well-done library with a chandelier done with open books. Quite fascinating. ( If gravity didn’t play its role, my books would be all up ). There is canteen just opposite to the 35 feet long bar and adjacent to the amphitheater. There is a mixology lab , which was done superbly . There were beakers, test tubes and a replica of experiment corner with tap and a wall done with the periodic table . (I wish my lab was as cool as this one) . An interesting part of the hostel area , a well-thought space done into a panvadi shop( Paan & cigarette) outside hostel with smoking area, just like the regular ones. There is a fleet of colorful scooters on stand turned into a sitting area with an open jeep and food truck outside.
Coming to the real matter ; Food. The cuisine they serve is progressive nostalgia. Each dish that is(was) a prominent part of student’s appetite in college life is taken and given a modern twist and fusion. We were welcomed with amuse bouche, that was a flat gol gappe, because usual are too mainstream for them. A flat papdi style with a molecular drop of pani that burst in your mouth.
Sambhar Cappuccino , Yes ! you heard that right! How can you think , they will serve something usual . So , there is a hot thick cappuccino of somewhere between sambhar and rasam served with Dosa crisp . A mind altering dish.
Dahi Bhalla Ice Cream, where molecular gastronomy is used to give a quirky twist. A bed of puffed rice and pomegranate is topped with nitro frozen dahi bhalla ice cream. Topped with tamarind and green chutney. Surprisingly the dish is savory rather than sweet.
Super Sago Samosas, a dish that was more of a piece of art, a colorful palate of an artist. A dish that looked as if it arrived from those fancy master chef kitchen .It comprises of a flaky samosa stuffed with sago and laid on a bed made with peanuts , mustard tempered potatoes, kiwi chutney, glazed pineapple, and onions. The texture and flavors complemented well.
Gattte ki boti, bajre ki roti and kadhi dip. Beautifully and delicately done,bite-sized bajre ki roti topped with gatte ki sabji and some kadhi dip to go with. The kadhi dip was the most amazing thing I ever tried. It was thick and the real taste and flavors were intact.
No guessing game here , Mama’s Aloo Paneer Sandwich . Sometimes it’s very hard to do a dish that’s very simple and dish that’s comfort food for many of us. This one was brilliantly done , the amount of butter my mother use to apply , the coriander & mint chutney . On point !
Egyptian Pizza, you won’t be able to resist just with one slice. I have tried thick crust, cheese bursts , pan based, handmade and many versions of pizza. This is one of a kind , where the base is flaky like a patty . A big thumbs up for this one. I am defiantly coming back just for this.
Pao Bhaji Zinker Burger , another mind boggling dish . The dish was served inside a hollow Rubik’s cube , only when you lift it you will find a vada pav sprinkled with some garlic chili chutney ( Meanwhile, thinking in my head where is Bhajji ? ). But giving out pao with Bhajji was way too conventional for Chef Harandad Singh . The surprise element was the tikki was made out of bhaji of pao bhaji and layered with cheese , slices of onion and lettuce. It has all the flavors ,and a single dish got me memories of not one but 3 college time favorite dish ; pao bhaji ,vada pao and gupta ji ka burger.
Babaji Ki Booti (Mocktail)
The concept is overwhelming and for sure a ride back to your college days but the only landslide the place has is sitting is not comfortable . But nevertheless , there are very few restaurants where I want to come back , prankster is definitely one them . If you are visiting the place , make a sure to take a round and be open in trying something new . There is a modern twist given to old favorites , so at any point, if you compare it with the old version you might ruin the dish for yourself.
